dO NOT WEIGH YOUR SELF-ESTEEM ON A SCALE

GRACE ON THE MOON

AFFIRMATIONS

We are what we believe.  Replacing the low self-esteem that is present in all eating disorders is an important step in recovery.  When your thoughts change, your behavior does, too.

Affirmations are a great way to help rewire your thinking and stop the negative voices that permeate your every day view of yourself.  The more you challenge the derogatory belief system you carry around with you, the easier it will become to believe that you are a worthy person who deserves good health, happiness, and to love yourself unconditionally.

Affirmations are a widely recommended therapeutic tool for changing low self-esteem.  They usually seem a little awkward at first, but practicing them with regularity makes them easier to incorporate into your every day view of yourself.  When you think highly of yourself, you want to make better choices in your daily life.  You start to set and achieve positive long-term goals.

Affirmations can be used in many ways.  You can print out a list and read it whenever you need a pick-me-up.  You can read them out loud to yourself.  You can copy some in a journal and write about what each one means to you.  You can write your favorites ones on small pieces of paper or sticky notes, using colorful markers and stickers to personalize them.  You can put them on your mirror, in your wallet or purse, in your car, in a drawer, or anywhere else you can easily refer to them.

Remember, it's common to feel a little silly when you start doing affirmations.  Keep saying and reading them, because with time and practice you will start to believe them.  It's been said "where the mind goes, the behind follows".  Change how you think and feel about yourself, and everything else will start to fall into place.  Get started with these affirmations, and add any you find along the way.
